Google Desktop

As I'm sure you know, Google does a great job of indexing the web. The searches are thorough and the results are returned fast. Remember, Google doesn't 'own' that data, it's just indexed it for quick access.

That same searching technology can work on your desktop computer!

Google Desktop is an application that runs on your computer and indexes the names and content of your files, emails, chats, etc. so finding info on your computer is lightening quick. Put a single word in the Google Desktop search box and all your mails and files containing that word are listed almost instantly. Then you can click the link and the application will start with the file opened. It's very cool!

To see a summary of all the stuff Google Desktop can do, click here. There is also a link to download the application on that page on the upper left.

If you're on a network, you can point your Google Desktop to your server disks so you can find info and files across your network. CAUTION: please talk to your network admin before you start indexing your network drives...a bunch of people using Google Desktop on the same disks can quickly bring your network to a crawl!

If you have a single computer with a lot of information on it, then you'll love what Google Desktop can do. No more lost files!

Happy searching!
